Invitations

A few weeks ago Adam and I had our engagement party. I wanted to design our invitations myself (surprise, surprise)! Recently I've gained an interest in hand lettering and thought I'd try my hand (haha, hand get it? #badpuns) at vectorizing my own little piece of typography. It was extremely fun and not bad for my first try! If I do say so myself. Here's how I did it.
I started out with some freehand sketches. I knew the basics of what I wanted it to look right, off the bat. The trick was just figuring out how to get the letters to do what I wanted to them to do without looking too warped. Basically, I figured out that minor changes can go a long, long way.
After coming up with a design I was satisfied with. (seen above) I decided that I was ready to start vectorizing my type! I vectorize a lots of stuff at work, but I'd never done type on this scale before, so I was nervous to start.

Woohoo screenshot!  Vectorizing the type was a little harder than I had anticipated. The curves can be really fickle and just like when you're drawing it, minor changes make a BIG difference. But after hitting a few snags (starting over once) I finally came up with a product that I was actually proud of. (Seriously, go me!)

As for the printed invitations. That was the result. I have always been a huge sucker for square formatting, and I was happy the way the round typography was the only focal point on the front part of the invite. Anyways, I hope you guys like it. If you're holding back on getting into hand lettering and/or vectorizing type, DO IT! It's difficult, but definitely worth the hard work you put into it. Hope you guys have a good Thursday! Peace.

  1. I love, love, love Illustrator though I have a love/hate with this tool! I can be both perfect or super fickle like you said. Gorgeous design! Sadly, the only medium I can "draw" in is Illustrator, I can create just about anything... I just can't do it with a real life pencil lol ;-)
